You may or may not have heard the terminology “Narconon” depending on whether or not a family member, friend, or you have had issues with substance abuse and alcohol dependency. This is an alternative, residential addiction treatment and recovery program implemented by numerous alcohol rehab and recovery facilities. As with any addiction, alcohol addiction treatment and rehabilitation requires a set of methods and therapies to ensure a complete recovery. The Narconon program was developed in February of 1966 as an addiction treatment and recovery program based on the book “The Fundamentals of Thought”, which was authored by L. Ron Hubbard. The book was originally administered to inmates of the Arizona State Penal System who had been incarcerated for drug abuse. Since its beginnings, the Narconon concept to treat addictions has promoted quite a different approach to substance and alcohol dependency without the administration or recourse of alternative medications.
A word about the New Life Program
Detoxification and rehabilitation are the two primary phases that the program is comprised, which came from Hubbard’s book the “Purification Rundown” which was the foundation of his “New Life Detoxification Program.” The Narconon alcohol treatment program involves a strict daily regimen of multi-minerals, oils, and vitamins while calcium, higher dosages of Niacin, and Magnesium are administered.
Additionally, exercise sessions and sauna therapy periods are included in the Narconon program as well. Finally, the program is balanced by the inclusion of TR’s or training courses which Hubbard originally developed in order to teach fellow Scientologists how to communicate with one another more effectively. In the original Narconon rehab program, the TR’s were designed to assist abusers and addicts rehabilitate more easily.
The average Narconon rehab program lasts between 3 and 4 months. Specific measures and procedures were put into place so that there was a substance-free withdrawal stage during detox but this didn’t happen until 1973. The original program didn’t address withdrawal stage.
